UC San Diego’s Palimpsest Ensemble will present a night of modern classical music on Wednesday, including the world premiere of a new work by a university composer.

The program includes Mario Davidovsky’s “Divertimento for 8” (2014), Harrison Birtwistle’s “Nenia: The Death of Orpheus” (1970) featuring soprano Hillary Jean Young, the world premiere of UC San Diego composer Xavier Beteta’s “La Catedral Abandonada” (2016), and Tristan Murail’s “mémoire érosion” (1976) featuring Nicolee Kuester on the French horn.

Founded in 2009, Palimpsest is San Diego’s only ensemble dedicated to works of modern music. It is led by UC San Diego faculty members and students.

Conductor Aleck Karis is a professor of music, and Wednesday night’s soloist, Young, is pursuing a doctor of musical arts degree at the university.

The concert, part of the Wednesdays@7 new music series, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Conrad Prebys Concert Hall. Tickets are $15.50 for the general public.
