San Diego’s Malashock Dance will open its 2016 season with two weekend performances of both signature dances and world premieres in an unusually intimate setting.

The program scheduled for 7:30 p.m. each evening Jan. 22-24 and Jan. 28-31 includes two Malashock signature pieces and two world premieres in the intimate Abbe Wolfsheimer Studio at Malashock Dance on 2650 Truxtun Road in Liberty Station.

The performances will blur lines with the audience sharing the studio space with the dancers. Patrons who have seen Malashock’s large-scale productions will appreciate this intimacy, and a new generation of patrons will find the setting thrilling, sexy, and thought-provoking.

“This year, we want our audiences to feel connected to each performance in a way that is rarely offered by dance companies in San Diego,” said John Malashock, founder and artistic director. “We have big plans for big impact this year and look to create deeper connections to our community, making each performance worthwhile, personal and, meaningful.”

The pieces to be performed are the signature works “Silver & Gold” and “Dreams & Prayers” followed by the world premieres of “Incoming” and “Times Unremembered.”

Tickets are $15 to $25 per person and are on sale at www.malashockdance.org or 619-260-1622.

In March, Malashock Dance will perform a new choreographic work at Copley Symphony Hall. This will give audience members an opportunity to see the company in a more traditional concert setting.

Malashock formed his nonprofit San Diego company in 1988 after a distinguished performing career with Twyla Tharp in New York
