A taste of the world’s longest running jazz festival comes to San Diego on Saturday when Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour performs at the Balboa Theatre downtown.

Held each September since 1958, the legendary festival is the longest consecutively-running jazz event in the world.

Hitting the road for the tour is an all-star line-up of award-winning artists from the 2015 festival roster, including saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, Grammy-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, lauded jazz drummer Gregory Hutchinson and music director Gerald Clayton on piano.

The stop in San Diego, presented by the La Jolla Music Society, is part of a 17-city tour that includes a five-night run at Birdland in New York.

The performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, opens the music society’s 2015-16 jazz series.

Tickets are $25-$75 and are available through the music society’s ticket office at 858.459.3728 or online at www.LJMS.org.
