MiraCosta College will present two performances next week of the music of Thelonious Monk combined with discussion of the jazz great’s life and work.

Monk, who died in 1982, is one of the greatest composers and most eclectic figures in jazz history. The bebop innovator wrote such classics as “Round Midnight,” “Blue Monk,” and “Straight, No Chaser.”

Music Department Chair Steve Torok and the MiraCosta Jazz Collective will present “The Eclectic & Brilliant Jazz of Thelonious Monk” at 1 p.m. and then again at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

“It’s a nice way of learning more about the artist while playing his music,” said Torok, who has presented similar programs about the music of Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Wayne Shorter.

General admission tickets for the evening performance and discussion are $10, while tickets for students, staff and seniors are $8 each. The 1 p.m. presentation is free.
