A San Diego Museum of Art music series celebrating the Balboa Park Centennial continues Thursday with soprano Susan Narucki.
The Grammy Award winning singer and pianist is a professor of music at UC San Diego. At 7 p.m. in the museum’s Hibben Gallery, Narucki and composer Stephen Lewis will explore the astonishing range of expression of the 20th century.
“The Art of Music” concert series, curated by Jann Pasler, is a multi-faceted exploration of the intersection between music and art. The series kicked off in January and will continue throughout the year. Visitors will be able to enjoy an array of musical genres, as the concerts feature different musicians and groups from San Diego and around the country.
In 1915, music was a central component of the Panama-California Exposition in celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal and San Diego’s position as the first port of call on the west coast of the United States
Concerts in the series take place on the third Thursday of each month. Next month’s concert will feature Japanese Harpsichordist Takae Ohnishi in a concert of Early Baroque music paired with contemporary compositions from Asia.
The concerts are a prelude to the museum’s major exhibition of the centennial, which will open Sept. 26 and explore the ways visual artists have taken inspiration from music throughout history. “The Art of Music” exhibition will feature over 200 paintings and sculptures, alongside examples of contemporary video, installation and musical instruments.
