A permanent exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum showcasing the region’s environment opens Saturday.

“Coast to Cactus in Southern California” shows off the diverse terrain of beaches, deserts and mountains with live animals, plants, hands-on interactive activities, specimens from the museum’s scientific collections and what museum officials call “immersive environments.”

“Coast to Cactus has been a labor of love for many years, making this grand opening very special for us,” said Michael Hager, president and CEO of the museum.

“We see this as a gift to the community, especially during Balboa Park’s centennial,” Hager said. “Our hope is to share with visitors how special this region is, and inspire them to get out and explore it for themselves.”

Museum officials said the exhibition was made possible in part by a $7 million grant from the California Department of State Parks and numerous private donations totaling close to $2 million.

The museum said it would reduce admission prices by $5 on Saturday and hold family activities throughout the weekend.
