Who said kids can’t cook?
Students from 11 schools will be competing on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Orange Glen High School, 2200 Glenridge Road, Escondido, in the second annual Master Chefs Competition from noon to 2 p.m. (awards ceremony from 1:30 to 2 p.m).
The fast-paced competition gives students a chance to showcase and fine-tune the culinary skills they have learned in class and to be evaluated by industry leaders, helping to prepare them for a possible career in food preparation.
Those competiting come from Escondido High, Fallbrook High, Granite Hills High,Mission Hills High, Orange Glen High, San Dieguito Academy, San Pasqual Academy, San Pasqual High School, Santana High, Valhalla High, and Vista High.
High school students will have one hour, two burners, and $40 worth of ingredients to woo the industry leaders who will be judging the high-octane contest.
Competition is strong for the annual prize, which Fallbrook High School won last year. The countywide event is put on by San Diego County Office of Education.
Judges include Amy DiBiase, executive chef/general manager at Tidal/Paradise Point Resort & Spa; Trey Foshee, executive chef/partner at George’s at The Cove; Carissa Giacalone, executive chef/director of culinary operations at Rancho Bernardo Inn; Marie Kelley, professor, consultant, TV Producer; Ron Oliver, chef de cuisine at The Marine Room; and Barry Schneider of Premier Food Services.
