Graduate students from the University of San Diego are teaming with professionals from The Old Globe on a production of Shakespeare’s “Pericles, the Prince of Tyre” that opened this weekend.

The classic, but rarely produced play is an epic of the trials, heartbreak and redemption of a warrior who must navigate the dangerous currents of human corruption and angry fate. He travels across the treacherous oceans of North Africa, ancient Syria, Turkey and Greece and is forever changed by the comically exotic and morally vague figures he meets.

USD’s nationally-renowned Master of Fine Arts Professional Actor Training Program, a joint venture with The Old Globe, recruits seven students each year from around the country to participate in an intensive two-year course of graduate study in classical theater. Private funding for the program is contributed through an endowment established by Donald and Darlene Shiley.

The play runs through Nov. 23 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. Tickets are available online.
