The husband-and-wife team of cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han bring their artistry to St. James by-the-Sea in La Jolla for an afternoon concert on Sunday.
Their program, “The Passionate Cello,” celebrates music’s power to transmit intense emotion with selections featuring the youthful exuberance of Strauss, to the burning desire of Chopin, to the profoundly spiritual Messiaen. In addition, soulful selections of Albeniz and Glazunov evoke vivid sensations of time and place.
Finckel and Han have been described as classical music’s “power couple.” They serve as artistic directors of an array of chamber music organizations on both coasts and in the Far East, including The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Music@Menlo in Silicon Valley, and the Chamber Music Today festival in Korea. Finckel is also professor of cello at The Juilliard School.
The concert is at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the church at 743 Prospect St. in La Jolla. Individual tickets are available online at $30 per person, with children and students free, space permitting.
