Due to high ticket demand, the La Jolla Playhouse announced Friday a week-long extension for its U.S. premiere production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

The classic tale of scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo, beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and dashing Captain Phoebus in 15th century Paris will now run Oct. 26 through Dec. 14 in the Playhouse’s Mandell Weiss Theatre.

Single tickets for the added week will go on sale to Playhouse subscribers on Oct. 19 and to the general public on Oct. 26. The extension week is available immediately through a subscription package purchase.

“Rehearsals for ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ have only just begun, but the excitement around the show is highly palpable,” said Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley. “It’s extremely gratifying that audiences are as eager to experience this powerful new musical as we are to share it with them.”

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and featuring the Oscar-nominated score from the 1996 Disney film, Hunchback is the only stage collaboration by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
