Balboa Park launches its 2014 free summer concert season Tuesday with the Japanese Navy Band and the Kearny Mesa Concert Band.

“Twilight in the Park” takes place from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 28. Other performers this week are Stars on the Water and Graceland.

Most of the concerts have a theme and those scheduled throughout the season include Broadway show tunes, jazz, folk and R&B, along with military bands and tribute nights to famous artists like Elvis Presley, Santana and the Supremes.

Shows like “Twilight in the Park” are a summer tradition at Balboa Park and at parks and public spaces throughout San Diego and in many smaller communities.

Fans are always allowed to bring picnics so they can enjoy a meal along with the mild San Diego temperatures and the tunes.

Carlsbad, for instance, hosts Friday night Jazz in the Park in the summer, beginning June 27, while Coronado is well known for its 6 p.m. Sunday night shows at Spreckels Park.

Here’s a partial list of free summer shows throughout the region, provided by the San Diego Tourism Authority.
