The city of El Cajon announced Monday that it is checking to see if organizations have interest in becoming tenants in the currently dormant East County Performing Arts Center.
City Manager Douglas Williford said the city was in the final design stages for “major renovations” to the facility, with a goal of reopening next year.
The 35,000-square-foot theater has been closed since 2009, according to the city. The facility has had a checkered history with several operators and financial problems since its 1977 opening, despite having superior acoustics.
“With a 1,145-seat capacity, it is one of the largest indoor event centers within the region and has a long history of being host to many memorable performing arts and entertainment events,” Williford said. “As we prepare the center for its bright future, it is important to the city that we investigate important opportunities to ensure the facility’s long-term success.”
El Cajon officials said the Point Loma-based Rock Church has inquired about becoming a tenant. The church operates a satellite house of worship in the East County city.
The City Council felt it was prudent to see if there were other interested parties, as well, Williford said.
Interested tenants would need to describe how the center would be used and how frequently; detail physical requirements for the building; propose a monthly or annual rental fee; and provide data to show the organization can meet its financial obligations and acquire liability insurance of at least $2 million.
The deadline for submitting a so-called Statement of Interest is June 16 at 5 p.m. at El Cajon City Hall.
