The acclaimed Minneapolis-based vocal ensemble Cantus will make a rare visit to San Diego, performing a single concert at St. James by-the-Sea in La Jolla on May 4 as part of a national tour.

Canuts is recognized as one of America’s finest professional vocal ensembles. The Washington Post described the ensemble’s sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power,” and refers to its music-making as “spontaneous grace.”

The group’s program at St. James, entitled “A Place For Us,” features folk songs and spirituals as well as music by Bernstein, Dvorak, Stephen Foster and Sibelius.

Other stops on Cantus’ current U.S. tour include concerts at the Cincinnati Opera, Wake Forest University and the Kennedy Center in Washington. Cantus is also preparing for the release of a new album, “Song of a Czech: Dvorak and Janacek for Men’s Voices.”

The concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m. Tickets are $25–$30 per person. Children and students will be admitted free at concert time, space permitting.

In addition to being the home of San Diego Early Music Society concerts and hosting performances by acclaimed groups such as Bach Collegium San Diego, St. James by-the-Sea is known for its music programs under the leadership of the Steven Townsend, pastor for music ministries.
