Nearly 13 million Americans watched Robert S. Mueller III testify Wednesday at two congressional hearings. Sean Colgan of Oceanside wasn’t one of them.

The 63-year-old Donald Trump superfan says he was busy with his niece celebrating her birthday. He hasn’t read the special counsel’s 448-page report either.

His new job driving cars for Enterprise didn’t permit study. He’s also shed the Honda Twinstar motorcycle with Trump sign, which he drove to Vista for what he called the country’s longest running pro-Trump rallies. (Engine problems, he says.)

“I’m a little short of time,” Colgan said in his ninth interview with Times of San Diego and first since late December.

But he carved out a few minutes to share thoughts on the former special counsel’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and the president’s activities.

Colgan agrees with Mueller’s finding that Russia interfered with the election.

“Of course, [President Putin] did,” Colgan said. “That wasn’t because he favors Trump, or because he hates Hillary. It’s because we are Enemy #1, and doing anything they can to weaken us is just basic to them.”

But Colgan also concurs, somewhat, with Trump’s characterization of the Mueller probe as a “witch hunt.”

“Given that there was zero evidence of collusion in the first place, ‘witch hunt’ isn’t entirely out of place,” he wrote in one response. “But given there is evidence of Putin interfering, it’s not entirely accurate either.”

Recently returned from a cross-country trip from Miami (driving a rental van carrying a friend’s belongings back to California), Colgan also had a chance to visit the scene outside Comic-Con.

“I didn’t have tickets for inside Comic-Con, but had a great time checking out the free stuff,” he said. “And chatting with the people there. I was surrounded by nerds and geeks, AKA, my people. :)”

This interview was conducted via email.

Times of San Diego: Have you read any of the Mueller report?

Sean Colgan: Now that I have a job, I’m a little short of time. So I haven’t read any of the Mueller report. I was only concerned with the basics — i.e., was there collusion? There wasn’t. From that flows everything else.

Is the report a “witch hunt” as President Trump has said?

Given that there was zero evidence of collusion in the first place, “witch hunt” isn’t entirely out of place. But given there is evidence of Putin interfering, it’s not entirely accurate either.

Did Trump attempt to obstruct justice — as the report details?

I don’t see how there can be obstruction w/o an underlying crime.

Did Trump lie about his contacts with Russians or his intent to build a Trump Tower in Moscow? If so, what is your reaction to these lies?

I don’t think Trump lied about the Moscow Trump Tower. The thinking that he did is based too much on what I call “Must Be” thinking. That is, his opponents take something said, and then conclude that he “must be” doing something wrong.

Do you agree or disagree with Mueller that Russia is still trying to influence American elections? What should be done about these alleged influence attempts?

Did Putin interfere with the election? Of course he did. That wasn’t because he favors Trump, or because he hates Hillary. It’s because we are Enemy #1, and doing anything they can to weaken us is just basic to them.

As for how Trump interacts with Putin, the Churchill dictum (“Jaw, jaw, jaw is better than war, war, war”) means that you turn a blind eye to the games that your enemy plays. With hardly any effort at all, Putin has managed to hinder the American president and the American government from doing what needs to be done. For two full years!

So of course Putin will interfere again. As for what should be done, our nerds should do all that can be done to stop their nerds. It wouldn’t hurt if we allowed our nerds to demonstrate how disruptive and destructive they can be.

Did Mueller satisfy any curiosity on your part about the report or investigation?

Mueller answered the basic question — there was no collusion. That satisfied me.

Do you think Sen. Mitch McConnell should allow debate and a vote on the SAFE Act — Securing America’s Federal Elections Act? Why or why not?

Of course McConnell should allow debate on the SAFE Act.

Is Rep. Duncan Hunter guilty of using campaign money for personal uses — such as family vacations and extramarital affairs? If so, what should happen to Hunter?

Since Hunter isn’t my congressman, I haven’t been paying as much attention to what’s going on with him as I likely should. If the allegations are true, he should resign.

Is Trump a racist for tweeting that four female members of Congress should “go back” to their countries of origin? Why or why not?

Trump’s tweets re “The Squad” weren’t racist. The complete absence of racial content should have made that clear, but the inability of Democrats to go beyond “Must Be” thinking governs all they say on this.

What was in the tweet was a reaction to the statements and actions of The Squad. “Anti-American” is a fair characterization of what those ladies are doing. If “Home is where the heart is,” then going “back” fits, regardless of where they were born.

How would you react if Trump tweeted that you “go back” to the country of your ancestors?

If I were as anti-American as the members of The Squad, and if Trump were to tweet that I should “go back” to Ireland, that (obviously) wouldn’t be a racist remark. And would rate as further proof of the lack of racial animosity on the part of our president.

He isn’t hostile to them because of their race, but because of what they do. Labeling the tweets as racist shows that Democrats either lack the ability to go beyond “must be” thinking or they’re being dishonest. Greater political advantage comes from dishonesty, so that gets my vote.

Is President Trump doing all he can to protect the well-being of asylum-seekers detained in the United States? Are you sympathetic to their health concerns?

Given the massive numbers of people showing up on our southern border, which really is a crisis, our president is doing a pretty good job. The Democratic position was to take political advantage and deny this reality.

As an example of how reality is ignored, a little boy in a group of hundreds of people heading north was sick. For DAYS! But mommy and daddy were fixated on getting here, and so didn’t treat their son. Six hours after being detained, the little boy dies.

Who got the blame? Why, the Border Patrol got the blame. Not long after, a little girl dies under identical circumstances. No surprise, the Border Patrol got the blame then, too. Neither death was their fault, but the political thing to do was misplace the blame, and so that’s what the Democrats did.

While I am sympathetic to the health concerns of those heading north, I am also mindful of the reality that if the Democrats weren’t playing the issue for political gain, and if the press would start accurately reporting that the treaty everyone talks about (but no one seems to have actually read) imposes no obligation on us to provide asylum to those fleeing violence, the situation would be a lot better.

The (never used anymore) term is *political* asylum, and so only applies to those fleeing *political* violence. If that reality was made clear to people before they headed north, maybe parents wouldn’t neglect the health of their children while they trudge northward on a fool’s errand.

Who do you expect the Dems to nominate for president? Who would be the toughest for Trump to beat?

It’s way too soon to predict who the Democrats will finally put up against Trump, or who has a chance to beat him. Especially when the big winner of the first Democratic debates was Donald J. Trump.

What are Trump’s odds of winning the Electoral College in 2020?

Since the Democratic Party has embraced the anti-American agenda of The Squad, and since they’re bound and determined to insult and demean everyone who doesn’t pledge blind fealty to extremist left of their party, I think our president has an excellent chance winning the Electoral College in 2020.

Will your street rallies resume in 2020?

I’m not sure. I’d like to start appearing in front of (Rep. Mike) Levin’s office now. But the lack of a motorcycle hinders me greatly. My brother-by-another-mother has found a Honda “Helix” motor scooter and he’s fixing that up for me. That’s going to take another month or two, but I should have reliable wheels by the end of summer. Giving me a bit over a year to plant myself in front of Mr. Levin’s office and wave my signs.

I’m off on Wednesdays so that will be the mornings I’ll be there. Until then, I’m part of the rallies that occur at Highway 76 and College Avenue in Oceanside every other Friday afternoon. We are getting BIG approval from the people that drive by. Which is most gratifying. If you have the time, why not swing by and say “hello” and talk to the other patriots?

Anything else readers should know about your view on current events?

Our president is a total patriot. His goal is to make things better for America. The Democrats can’t (or refuse to) see that because their leadership is focused on winning, and not on what is best for America.

In my humble opinion, the way to victory for any Republican anywhere is to point out what things look like when Democrats are totally in charge. Even if that Republican is running for Dog Catcher in Podunkvile, Indiana, he should refer to how things are in San Francisco.

There are NO Republicans on the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco County, so how things are is totally a result of Democratic policies. The Middle Class has fled. Rich people live nice, and the (ever increasing numbers) of the poor are sleeping in tents on the sidewalks.

It’s so bad that there are teams of municipal employees whose job it is to steam-clean the human excrement off the sidewalks. Meaning that ‘Frisco is literally becoming, to use Obama’s term, a shitstorm of a place.

Los Angeles is rapidly becoming just as bad. So is Orange County. We’re not far behind. The value of this once great state is to serve as a shining example of how NOT to run things. I pray that the example and the lesson is heeded.
