A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train traveling south of Old Town late Thursday night.

The train was going 46 miles per hour when a man walked onto the tracks and into its path, said Sgt. Jason King of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies from the sheriff’s transit enforcement unit were dispatched to the scene near the intersection of Washington and Hancock streets a little after 10:35 p.m.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, King said.

Sheriff’s officials asked anyone with any information regarding the fatality to call them at (858) 565-5200.
