A San Diego charter school senior is among 10 students across the state to receive a $2,000 scholarship administered by the California Charter Schools Association, it was announced Wednesday.
Gomper Preparatory Academy student Danny Maganda is the recipient of a 2019 Susan Steelman Bragato Scholarship, which is given to students for academic achievement and service in their communities. Steelman Bragato, who died in 2005, co-founded the state’s first charter school, according to the CCSA.
Maganda spent his early life in an unstable home and dealt with violence in his community, according to the CCSA. Since then, he has received an award from the Urban League of San Diego for maintaining an GPA of at least 3.5 and has been named to Gompers Preparatory’s honor roll. Maganda plans to attend UC Berkeley, with the goal of earning a master’s degree in business.
The scholarship recipients are being honored this week in Sacramento during the CCSA’s 26th annual California Charter Schools Conference.
In addition to Maganda, students in Vacaville, Corning, Oakland, San Francisco, Hayward, Porter Ranch, Santa Ana, Los Angeles and Apple Valley are also receiving scholarships.
