The Fleet Science Center will open an innovative exhibition Friday that attempts to evoke childhood memories of play with a scientific twist.
The “Pause|Play” exhibition was developed by the Fleet with contributions from sound designer Chris Warren and artist and engineer Dave Ghilarducci. It is the most ambitious exhibition undertaken by the Balboa Park museum in two decades.
The exhibition entices visitors to explore through play, and it incorporates a scientific twist to enhance every activity. “Pause|Play” features more than 11 experiences that were each designed to evoke childhood memories.
“We love being able to create something new and original for our visitors,” said Dr. Steve Snyder, CEO of the Fleet. “Pause|Play allows visitors to engage in full-body interactives, while using science, resulting in a completely unique experience.”
For example, in the “Neighborhood” area of the exhibition, visitors can ride a tricycle with square wheels, or use special shoes to walk on what appears to be water in a pool.
A seemingly ordinary playground slide clocks a visitors’ speed, allowing them to try out different positions to see how it affects the result.
Basketball becomes a mysterious game when you wear distortion glasses, which makes aiming for the hoop an all-new challenge.
The bilingual exhibition will be open from Feb. 15 to Sept. 2 and included with the cost of regular admission. The Fleet opens at 10 a.m. daily.
