Rep. Mike Levin said President Trump’s proposal on Saturday to extend protections for Dreamers is too limited to be the compromise necessary to reopen the federal government.
“President Trump’s proposal only includes the most limited, temporary set of protections for Dreamers and individuals with Temporary Protected Status, not the permanent solution that is needed for Dreamers,” said the Democrat who represents north coastal San Diego and south Orange counties.
“It also still includes nearly $6 billion for the president’s wasteful, ineffective border wall, rather than smarter, more effective border security measures that I support, like increased technology at ports of entry,” he added.
In an address from the White House, Trump proposed a three-year extension of protections for the Dreamers — some 700,000 undocumented immigrants brought to America as children — in exchange for more than $5 billion for 230 miles of border barriers.
The shutdown over Trump’s demand for border wall funding is now in its 29th day. It is the longest in American history.
Levin said the proposal “is not a compromise,” but promised to “keep and open mind to working with the President.”
“Before we consider any immigration and border security proposal, we must first re-open the government and get federal workers the paychecks they deserve,” he said.
