An electric-scooter rider was seriously injured Tuesday in a solo accident on a Golden Hill thoroughfare, San Diego police reported.
The 31-year-old woman was heading west in the 2100 block of Broadway about 6:45 a.m. when she found herself unable to slow down for unknown reasons, Officer Sarah Foster said.
Becoming frightened, she jumped off the scooter and tumbled onto the roadway. Medics took her to a hospital for treatment of a fractured thighbone, Foster said.
It was unclear if a mechanical problem with the scooter might have played a role in the crash.
This is the third scooter accident in the past week. Last Friday, a 65-year-old woman was seriously injured when she fell while riding an electric scooter with family members in the Marina area.
On Sunday, a 48-year-old man who had been drinking alcohol was hurt Sunday when he crashed his dockless electric scooter into another scooter ahead of him.
In response to the increasing numbers of scooter accidents as electric scooter sharing gains in popularity, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has proposed a suite of regulations intended to improve dockless scooter safety and education. Among them, speed limits on popular pedestrian areas, such as the Gas Lamp, Embarcadero and the beach boardwalks.
