A man apparently looking down at his cellphone was struck and seriously injured by an Amtrak train in Little Italy late Saturday night.
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department said the accident occurred at 11:35 p.m. on the tracks at West Hawthorne and California streets.
Witnesses said the man was looking down at his cellphone and did not notice his position near the tracks or the approaching train.
The train went into emergency braking, but was still traveling about 30 mph when it struck the man.
He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
