San Diego Police will be on the lookout for drunk or drugged drivers at a checkpoint scheduled for Friday night at an undisclosed location within the city limits.
The checkpoint will be in operation from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at a location chosen because of earlier collisions and arrests. Officers will be checking licenses and looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment while delaying motorists only momentarily.
Police routinely announce the checkpoints because research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent through advance publicity.
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of an arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and expenses that can exceed $10,000.
