Reading, vets and pets – who can lose?
San Diego County has launched its Summer Reading Challenge, which though focused on youngsters, offers all book fans gifts and incentives to read at least 10 books or for 10 hours during the popular summer reading season.
But if anyone manages to extend their reading and double that, a charitable group that hooks veterans up with furry friends will get a donation.
Pets for Patriots will get $5 for each person who succeeds in reading 20 hours or 20 books this summer, a goal that can be tracked online once a person signs up or with a downloaded form.
Once accepted by the organization, veterans can adopt a pet from various shelters, including the county’s, and receive discounted pet healthcare and a $150 “welcome home” stipend from the Veterans’ Pet Food Bank program to help with setting up a new home for a pet.
The county’s reading program began June 1 and continues through Aug. 1. Prizes include ear buds, tote bags and coupons for admission to local attractions. They are available July 1 – Aug. 1.
