A man convicted in the slaying of a carnival worker gunned down nine years ago outside a Lakeside tavern was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole, plus six years.
Destin Withers, 40, was convicted of first-degree murder on Feb. 11, 2008, death of 28-year-old Mark “Randy” Vogler. Jurors found that a special circumstance allegation that Withers had a prior conviction for murder was confirmed.
Vogler was fatally shot as he walked near the Roundup Tavern on Woodside Avenue about 10:35 p.m. An exhaustive investigation by multiple agencies led to the arrests of Withers and Brian Jeffrey Baldino in connection with Vogler’s death.
In a separate case, Withers was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 33 years to life in the 2012 shooting death of a 20-year-old mother and dumping her body near the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido.
Baldino, 32, is set for trial next month.
