Tens of thousands of people in San Diego and across Southern California will set out Wednesday on Thanksgiving trips by car and by plane.
An average of 60,000 passengers a day are expected to pass through San Diego International Airport during the holiday travel period.
The airport recommends arriving at least 1 ½ hours before departure for domestic flights and 2 ½ hours for international flights.
Farther north, Los Angeles International Airport is expected to be the third busiest in the nation, with over 200,000 passengers a day.
The Automobile Club of Southern California predicted that 3.65 million Southern California residents will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, up 3.1 percent from 2015, when 3.54 million took Thanksgiving trips. The projected number of travelers this year is the highest since 2007, when the number stood at 3.99 million, according to the Auto Club.
Most of those trips will be by car, and Caltrans advises drivers to check its online map of road conditions before setting out. There’s also a mobile version available.
The National Weather Service office in San Diego warned that Santa Ana winds late Wednesday and Thursday could make driving difficult in mountain passes. Gusts of up to 50 mph are forecast for the Cajon Pass, the Santa Ana Mountains and Foothills, the San Gorgonio Pass, Highway 74 through the Riverside County Mountains, and Highway 8 in San Diego County from Alpine to the Imperial County border.
