The largest festival of Asian films on the West Coast kicked off Thursday and runs through Nov. 12 at venues throughout San Diego County.
The 17th San Diego Asian Film Festival will present more than 140 films from 15 countries. The Pacific Arts Movement has selected films and programs with themes of injustice, immigration, family, art, sexuality and even the music industry.
Venues includes UltraStar Mission Valley at Hazard Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, UC San Diego’s Calit2 campus and the Museum of Photographic Arts. The final day’s events take place at the historic La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas.

San Diego Beer Week
Another 10-day-long, uniquely San Diego event begins Friday. The San Diego Brewers Guild‘s annual Beer Week offers more than 500 beer-centric events in America’s craft beer capital. Sample some of the newest brews and learn about this burgeoning local industry. A complete list of events is available online.
The Power of Architecture
The dramatic Salk Insitute in La Jolla is considered one of the major landmarks of 20th Century architecture. An exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art examines the life and work of the architect behind it, Louis Kahn, focusing on the power of architecture as an art form. Over 200 objects related to the famous Philadelphia architect’s work are on display. The museum in Balboa Park is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Thomas the Tank Engine
If you’re not too old for trains, colorful Thomas the Tank Engine and friends are making excursions on Saturday and Sunday at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris. The journey includes a 25-minute ride with Thomas and a 15-minute ride with Percy. Children will meet Sir Topham Hatt, the superintendent of the storybook Railroad from the Island of Sodor. Walk for Veterans in Chula Vista
The 15th annual Chula Vista Veterans Walk takes place Saturday. The 6K “Fun Walk” kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Chula Vista Veterans home. A $35 registration fee includes a T-shirt, dog tag for those who finish, lunch and a closing ceremony at VFW Post 2111. Proceeds go to benefit the Veterans Home.
World-Record Shredding
Shredding unneeded documents may not seem like recreation, but the annual San Diego County Credit Union‘s free annual event has set a Guinness world record. This year’s event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the credit union’s El Cajon Branch at 312 W. Main Street; National City Branch at 2525 East Plaza Boulevard; and Soka University of America at 1 University Drive in Aliso Viejo.
