Good morning, San Diego ☀️

Here’s what we have for you today:

  • Gas prices around town have finally stopped going up. But they’re still above $6 a gallon.
  • Here’s a list of libraries and rec centers where people can take refuge from the weather.
  • A local man was sentenced to two years in prison for his part in a scheme that ripped off EBT users around the state for $4 million.

Everything that could go wrong did in Padres’ 3-2 Game 1 loss

As a heat wave enveloped San Diego County, the Padres faced a heat check of their own on Saturday night — and were arguably a rail away from clearing it against the National League’s best team.

Specifically, a railing running across the ceiling of American Family Field in Milwaukee, which stopped what could’ve been a go-ahead home run by San Diego’s Ty France and helped the Brewers preserve a 3-2 win in Game 1 of their Division Series matchup.

It was a bizarre and confusing play capping a night where it seemed like everything that could go wrong for the Padres did, as our contributor Barry Bloom wrote for us covering the game. Padres legend Tony Gwynn used to have a catchphrase about how often that seemed to happen for this club, as Bloom writes.

The Padres, who entered the series after capping a 20-3 run with a sweep of Chicago in the Wild Card round, don’t have much time to gather themselves.

Game 2 in the series is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time today, where they’ll look to avoid falling to the brink of elimination before they come back to the friendly confines of Petco Park.
