Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
If you’re anything like me, you probably spent last Sunday holed up in your house watching week one of the NFL season. However, watching football without the Chargers in San Diego still hurts a little. I can’t help but feel a disconnect when the “LAC” acronym is posted on the scoreboard.
So if you’re still mourning the Chargers’ absence in San Diego, look no further than Point Loma High, whose varsity football team is off to another hot start after an excellent 2025-2026 season. Last season ended with the Pointers losing to Mater Dei in the playoffs. That was their first (and last) loss of the season.
But after Coach Ryan Price won the Los Angeles Chargers High School Head Coach of the Year award and two players were named to the All-CIF First Team, the team was poised for another big year.
Four games into the season, it looks like they aim to pick up right where they left off. In their first game back on Aug. 21, they delivered a 65-0 rout to Leuzinger High School. Both sides of the ball were firing for Point Loma, running just 25 offensive plays in the game and scoring on six of those plays. The defense also picked up two pick-sixes adding to the crooked scoreboard.
They’ve since gone on remaining undefeated after facing off against Otay Ranch, La Jolla and Grossmont. The Pointers weren’t as sharp against Otay Ranch, beating them 28-20 after a late-game push from the Mustangs. Since then, they’ve been back on track, besting La Jolla in a 52-25 blowout.
This Friday, The Pointers take on Del Norte at their home field at 7 p.m. Based on the disappointing week one Chargers loss, it might be worth tuning into a winning team for once. This one happens to be in your backyard, not 120 miles up the freeway.
