Good morning, San Diego ☀️

Here’s what we have for you today:

  • Unless you’re planning on attending the NASCAR event, consider avoiding Coronado. Officials have warned of the heavy traffic this weekend.
  • Our last installment of “Lost restaurants of San Diego” chronicles the rise of chains.
  • San Diego’s unemployment rate is going down and is lower than the state and national rate.

Riding a sea of Stars and Stripes, Mission Beach rallies behind Team USA for World Cup

World Cup fever is sweeping across San Diego.

Nearly 25,000 Mexico fans flooded Chula Vista’s Third Avenue Thursday, claiming it as “Mexican territory” in the match against South Korea.

Yesterday, fans showed out in droves to Mission Beach’s FIT Social to cheer on Team USA as they faced Australia. One fan, in his early twenties said the team looked the best it had in his lifetime — albeit that’s probably only six World Cup tournaments. But, still, that doesn’t detract from the fact our contributor Kristos Zafiropoulos, reports the atmosphere was electric.

Lucky for both legions of fans, both Mexico and the United States emerged victorious from their respective matches. It won’t be the end for either team, and it’s almost certain aficionados won’t stop showing up. Next week, Mexico plays Czechia on Wednesday and the U.S. plays Turkey on Thursday.

One thing is clear between both of the celebrations: this is bigger than a game.
