The San Diego Chargers on Thursday released the first new renderings of the $1.8 billion football stadium and convention center annex they propose in downtown San Diego.
A total of 13 different images were posted on the team’s website less than 48 hours before the kick off of signature gathering to put the stadium proposal on the November general election ballot.
The Chargers described the renderings as “a conceptual design intended to convey the Chargers’ vision for what the stadium and convention center expansion could look like,” adding that the final design would depend on the city and others involved.
Signature gathering begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at a parking lot at 13th and K streets in the East Village. National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell, Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos, quarterback Philip Rivers and former running back LaDainian Tomlinson are among those scheduled to attend.
The team needs around 67,000 valid signatures to qualify an initiative for ballot. The proposal calls for raising the hotel room tax to 16.5 percent to pay for construction.
