Plans to build a statue of San Diego native and Padre legend Tony Gwynn in his home community of Poway were presented on Tuesday night during a city council meeting, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

The project, which will take seven to nine months to complete, was proposed in October, and since then over 30 designs have been submitted before the final design from artist Seth Vandable was selected.

To pay for the Tony Gwynn memorial, Poway has raised around $108,203, nearing its goal of $150,000.

In addition, it has motioned to appropriate $19,259 that was raised during a concert at the Poway Center for Performing Arts to help fund the memorial for the man dubbed “Mr. Padre.”
