Steve Stallings, councilman of the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians in northern San Diego County, will serve as chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, the organization announced Monday.
The nonprofit is comprised of tribal governments that advocate for the protection of tribal sovereignty and the right of tribes to have gaming on Indian lands.
“I follow a long line of respected tribal leaders and vow to continue their work in protecting the inherent sovereign rights of California’s tribal governments,” Stallings said.
“I would like to thank former Chairman Daniel J. Tucker for his wisdom and guidance, as well as his longstanding dedication to CNIGA,” Stallings said, referring to the Sycuan tribal chairman in El Cajon.
“Tucker will be deeply missed but we wish him a world of happiness as he enjoys his much deserved retirement,” he said.
The new chairman has served on the CNIGA executive committee for six years as both the vice chairman and treasurer.
Damon Sandoval, of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians in Riverside County, is the organization’s new vice chairman. Henry Murphy, vice chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, will be a southern area representative to the association’s executive committee.
