An investigation into a fiery wrong-way collision that left two men with major injuries continued Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred Monday at 8:16 p.m. on I-5, south of Carmel Valley Road, when a 38-year-old Carlsbad man driving a white Prius collided head-on with a gray RAV4 driven by a 37-year-old Carlsbad resident, officials said.

At least one of the two vehicles became engulfed in flames in the righthand lane of I-5 north, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

Highway Patrol officers responded and both drivers were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

CHP San Diego is investigating the crash, including whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
