Governor Newsom signed new legislation Sunday to expedite the development of bike lanes, transit lanes, and pedestrian walkways along the coastline.

Senate Bill 689 — introduced by Senator Catherine Blakespear (D-Encinitas) — allows local governments to create new bike lanes and walking paths without pursuing a lengthy approval process.

The legislation was spurred by a bicyclist in San Diego being hospitalized after a vehicle struck her. The city had proposed adding protected bike lanes in the area just two weeks prior, but was denied due to lacking the proper approvals.

“We want to encourage projects in coastal areas that make non-driving options easier and safer,” said Sen. Blakespear.
