San Diego Loyal SC hosts German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Snapdragon Stadium.
Tickets remain available for the match, the first time Borussia Dortmund has played in San Diego. Prices start at $49.
Thursday also will mark the first time that Loyal SC will play against European opposition, four years after the club was established.
In 2019, Borussia Dortmund visited the U.S. as part of a tour that included stops to play the Seattle Sounders at Seattle’s Lumen Field and Liverpool at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
The team, which finished second in the German Bundesliga in 2023, has a deep and talented roster that includes budding American star Giovanni Reyna, Dortmund legend Marco Reus and Bundesliga Rookie of the Year Karim Adeyemi.
Dortmund also will face Manchester United in Las Vegas Sunday and Chelsea in Chicago on Aug. 2 as part of their 2023 tour.
Manchester United also has an exhibition in San Diego, Tuesday at Snapdragon vs. Wrexham.
The Loyal are in the midst of a two-game win streak, including a 5-0 victory over Colorado Springs on July 14. Adrien Perez and Blake Bodily made the USL Championship Team of the Week for their performances – Perez scored a goal and recorded a pair of assists while Bodily had two goals.
The team (8-5-6, 30 points) returns to USL Championship action at Torero Stadium at 3 p.m. Sunday, again vs. Colorado Springs. The Loyal, along with Oakland Roots SC, are chasing the west’s top three teams, Sacramento, San Antonio and El Paso.
