It seems drug smugglers will try anything — including the kitchen sink.
Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa port of entry intercepted nearly 900,000 fentanyl pills this week that were concealed inside porcelain sinks.
The smuggling incident occurred Monday afternoon when a 45-year-old Mexican man driving a 2000 Ford cargo van entered the port with a shipping manifest for two porcelain sinks.
During inspection, a canine team alerted officers to the presence of the drugs, which were in 12 packages embedded in the sinks.
The pills have a street value of $2.6 million.
“Narcotics traffickers will try new and innovative ways to smuggle dangerous drugs across our borders, but CBP officers are always on their toes,” said Rosa Hernandez, port director at Otay Mesa.
Officers seized the shipment, cargo van, and fentanyl pills, and turned the driver over to Homeland Security.
