The San Diego-Coronado Bridge was closed for hours Friday evening as police tried to talk down a person threatening to jump off the span over San Diego Bay, authorities said.

The Coronado Police Department initially announced the closure in both directions due to “police activity” just after 4:30 p.m., without providing further information.

The bridge was reopened at 12:59 a.m. Saturday, but authorities did not offer further information about the incident.

Caltrans San Diego also posted to Twitter regarding the closure.

Users reported “standstill traffic” on the app Waze after 7 p.m., and speeds of less than 10 mph on parts of Silver Strand Boulevard, the only other way into or out of Coronado when the bridge is closed.

Traffic was clogging both the north and south ends of the boulevard, according to Waze.

In January, Caltrans was awarded $14 million to design a suicide barrier for the bridge. Initial plan calls for an 8- to 10-foot-tall stainless-steel net attached to the outside of the existing bride railings.
