San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith has been mentioned as a possible Republican candidate to challenge Rep. Scott Peters in the 52nd District in 2016.
The national political website RollCall.com reported Monday that Goldsmith is scheduled to have a phone conversation with the recruitment chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. The report cited sources and noted that Peters represents a tossup district.
Gerry Braun, a spokesman for the city attorney, quickly rejected the idea. “Jan Goldsmith is not even considering a run for Congress against Scott Peters. Not thinking about it. Not interested,” Braun said in a tweet.
Goldsmith, who was previously mayor of Poway, beat Peters in the race for city attorney in 2008.
