Former San Diego mayor and now talk-show host Roger Hedgecock came to the defense of congressional candidate Carl DeMaio on Thursday, a day after he was sharply criticized by former Councilwoman Donna Frye.
Hedgecock said DeMaio stood almost alone seeking reforms to help San Diego solve its pension-funding crisis.
“I remember Carl very well as the guy who made it happen and I’m pleased today to be here to endorse Carl,” said Hegecock, who spoke at a press conference at the DeMaio campaign headquarters.
Also present and vouching for DeMaio were Richard Rider of San Diego Tax Fighters and April Boling, former chair of the San Diego Pension Reform Committee. Both credited DeMaio with doing the lion’s hare of the work in solving the city’s pension-funding crisis.
DeMaio said Peters “has chosen to run a personal smear campaign against me” to deflect voters from the “Enron-style” mismanagement of the city’s finances.
DeMaio, a Republican, faces incumbent Scott Peters, a Republican, in the race to represent the 52nd District in Congress.
