Coronado’s beaches joined those along Silver Strand and Imperial beach under water-contamination warnings as sewage-tainted runoff from the Tijuana River flowed north.

The county Environmental Health Department on Sunday afternoon expanded the existing water-contact closure area at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline north to include Coronado.

Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary as a result of the recent rainfall and is still flowing.

“Observations today indicate northward moving ocean currents and contamination of ocean water at Coronado is suspected,” the heath department said in a statement.

“Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.”

Closure orders for Silver Strand and Imperial Beach were issued on Saturday and Friday.
