PACIFIC BEACH – To promote greater environmental stewardship, student members of the Mission Bay Interact Club have been working with Friends of Rose Creek to raise awareness of the vital need to continue educating the public on the importance of Rose Creek in Pacific Beach.

The officers of the school’s Interact Club, along with city officials, Friends of Rose Creek, and the San Diego Bird Alliance, participated in an announcement on April 23 at the east end of the Mike Gotch Bridge, unveiling new signage that identifies Rose Creek.

The new Rose Creek signs will appear east and west of the waterway, from the north end of Mission Bay Drive along the edge of the creek. The purpose of the increased signage is to further promote environmental stewardship.

The Interact Club members displayed a replica of a banner that draws attention to the importance of maintaining a clean, healthy waterway.

“The final 20-foot wide banner, now in its last stages of production, will be hung along Garnet Avenue,” said Elise Lijenstrand-Mjoen, Interact Club president. “After attending a series of meetings with Friends of Rose Creek, our club members created the banner together. We are excited for the community awareness it will bring.”

“The importance of Mission Bay High’s connection to Rose Creek cannot be overstated,” Interact Club member Wyatt Hinton said. “As a school, we interact with Rose Creek in almost all of our science classes by using it to do hands-on assignments and labs studying and learning about our local watersheds, testing for water purity, etc.”

In addition to being an involved Interact Club member, junior Leanne Hillman added, “My part is to manage our social media account and network with our helping adults. I post on social media regarding our meetings and upcoming events that we are scheduling.”

Interact Club vice president Annabella Capalbo said the purpose of the club’s participation in raising awareness of the creek is simple.

“As MBHS students, we understand how important it is to keep the creek clean. That is why maintaining the water and overall quality of Rose Creek is vital to our community and to us as a club. We aim to connect with individuals and inspiring organizations to better the community we live in, to create a cleaner environment to save our future.”

The new 20-foot banner along Garnet Avenue will be unfurled soon.
