The San Diego Police Department arrested six drivers for DUIs at an overnight checkpoint in Pacific Beach.

This checkpoint was held at 1600 Garnet Avenue between 11 p.m. on Friday until 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to a police report. Over 900 drivers passed through the checkpoint, and 659 of those drivers were screened by officers.

12 drivers had to undergo further screening to evaluate their sobriety, according to the SDPD. Six arrests for DUIs were issued, and six vehicles were also impounded.

“The message is simple, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Drinking alcohol and driving do not mix,” said Officer Mark McCullough in a statement.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, you should also plan to not get behind the wheel of a vehicle or ride a motorcycle.”

The SDPD has offered a few tips to avoid drunk driving:

  • Plan a safe way to get home before the party.
  • Choose a designated driver to remain sober.
  • Take public transportation or use a car service.
  • Don’t walk home alone either. Ask a sober friend to walk with you.
  • Confiscate the keys of someone who is about to drive drunk.

This checkpoint was funded by a “Step Grant” from the California Office of Traffic Safety, according to the SDPD. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also leading the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown.
