Councilmember Henry Foster III trailed opponent Martha Abraham – but just slightly – as early results came in Tuesday.
In the first release, Abraham leads the District 4 field with 39.93% of the vote; Foster is a nip behind at 38.80%.
Meanwhile, fellow incumbent Kent Lee is poised to continue representing District 6. Lee leads his race with 55.29% of the vote, followed by his sole challenger, Mark Powell, at 44.27%.
District 4 primarily encompasses southeastern San Diego. Two candidates are challenging Foster in the race for the seat/ Abraham, a NICU nurse and a Democrat, was endorsed by the Sierra Club, La Prensa San Diego and the San Diego Voice & Viewpoint newspaper.
The other challenger, administrative assistant Johnny Lee Dang, is endorsed by the San Diego County Republican Party.
In addition to the San Diego County Democratic Party, Foster has endorsements from Rep. Juan Vargas and Rep. Sara Jacobs, both San Diego Democrats in Congress, state senator Akilah Weber-Pierson and secretary of state Shirley Weber.
District 6 covers Mira Mesa, Kearny Mesa, Scripps Ranch, University City and Sorrento Valley.
Powell has endorsements from the County Republican Party, Assemblymember Carl DeMaio and the Union-Tribune. Among those backing Lee are county Democrats, the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council and a handful of local state representatives.
Both Lee and Foster endorsed each other; each received support from fellow councilmembers Vivan Moreno and Sean Elo-Rivera, as well as council President Joe LaCava.
