POINT LOMA – While winter sport athletes at Point Loma High are battling through CIF playoffs, spring sports are kicking off the spring season, which wraps up the prep year.
Winter playoffs
Girls basketball led all teams by winning the City Central League title with a 7-1 record (15-10 overall). Girls soccer also had a successful season, finishing 10-4-3 (2-3-3 in Western League play). They received a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in Div. I.
Boys basketball finished 16-10 overall (5-5 in Eastern League). They were seeded No. 8 in Div. II. Boys soccer, the defending CIF Div. I champion, was winless in league play last year before their playoff run. This year, the team finished 2-8-7 overall and 1-6-3 in Western League play.
Girls water polo turned in a second-place finish in Eastern League (5-4) and 8-16 overall. MaxPreps slotted the team as 14th among 16 Div. II teams with only the top dozen making playoff spots.
Pointer Connor Perry earned a CIF championship wrestling in the 150-pound class.
Spring preview
It was a memorable year for spring sports on the Pointer campus last year, with both baseball and softball bringing home CIF championships. For the boys, it was their second consecutive title, while the girls went on to become Southern California champions.
Both teams feel they have replaced graduates with talent capable of hoisting new CIF banners. Baseball begins with a home game on March 4, while softball’s first match is Feb. 28 at Sage Creek.
For boys lacrosse, a 2024 CIF banner was followed last year by a 13-6 season (3-3 in Western League) and a 9-4 loss to Santana in the first-round CIF Div. I playoffs. Their season began Monday.
Girls lacrosse finished 5-8 (2-5 in Eastern League) last year and did not qualify for the playoffs. Their season begins next week.
In girls beach volleyball, the team posted an overall record of 18-7, including 7-1 in league, and ranked 18th best in California and fifth best in San Diego’s CIF section. The girls were eliminated by Torrey Pines in a second-round playoff game. Play for the new season begins on Tuesday.
Boys and girls track and field boast the largest roster of any sport, while boys tennis and boys volleyball begin on Friday, and boys golf tees off on Wednesday against Scripps Ranch at Torrey Pines.
Traditional competitive cheer began this week as well.
