San Diego State’s football team continued their fall camp this week, gearing up for their season opener Aug. 31 against Texas A&M, Commerce.
The team took a big step towards regular season action with its annual Fan Fest scrimmage last weekend. The Aztecs used five different quarterbacks throughout the scrimmage, highlighted by sophomore quarterback AJ Duffy completing seven of 12 attempts for 144 yards.
The Aztec offense was limited to just two field goals. Junior cornerbacks Chris Johnson and Jelani Whitmore each had a first-half interception.
The offense picked up steam in the second half, scoring touchdowns on three different drives. Jaylon Armstead was a highlight, running 40 yards for a touchdown on the offense’s second drive of the second half.
Wednesday was a helmet practice for the Aztecs, following a full-pads practice on Tuesday. The team worked on individual special teams, edge drills, end-of-game situations, blocking, running drills and finishing up with red-zone and third down situations.
“It was another good workday,” head coach Sean Lewis said following Wednesday’s practice. “There were good competitive sessions all throughout the day and I’m looking forward to working through the rest of the week and the new opportunities that lay ahead.”
San Diego State has 20 preseason practices scheduled prior to their opening game week of practices which begin Aug. 25.
In other preseason news, three Aztecs were named to the 2024 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch list.
Senior defensive lineman Tupu Aluala, from Honolulu, junior offensive lineman Myles Murao, from Torrance, and Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli – who was born in La Mesa and attended Cathedral Catholic High – were among 96 players on the initial list for the award, which is presented to the best college football player of Polynesian ancestry.
Tickets are on sale for the Aztecs opener as well as all other 2024 games.
