There will be a new voice for San Diego State football this fall.

San Diego Sports 760‘s Jon Schaeffer will take over on play-by-play for the Aztecs longtime announcer, Ted Leitner, who has called SDSU football games for nearly three decades, including the past 19 seasons.

Leitner isn’t done done yet though. He will finish up his storied career by calling SDSU’s men’s basketball for the 30th and final season during the 2024-25 campaign. He also had been the radio voice of the San Diego Padres, but stepped away from that post in 2020.

Schaeffer has been with iHeartMedia since July 2017 and co-hosts “Jon and Jim” weekdays from 3-6 p.m. He has handled pregame duties for Aztec football as well as pregame, halftime and postgame duties for SDSU men’s basketball.

Schaeffer also has experience working play-by-play with the Phillies Radio Network, FOX College Sports, ESPN GamePlay, ESPN3, Mountain West Network and Big East Digital Network, along with numerous schools in the northeast.

Rich Ohrnberger, the color analyst for Aztec football for the past seven seasons, will continue in that role. He played five years in the NFL and co-hosts the “Big Rich, TD & Fletch” weekday radio show from 6-9 a.m. on San Diego Sports 760.

The former Charger, who played 39 games across five seasons in the NFL, also hosts “FOX Sports Saturday” and “FOX Sports Sunday,” and is part of NBC 7 San Diego’s “Football Night in San Diego” and “Sports Wrap” teams.

The teaming of Schaeffer and Ohrnberger also links two Penn State grads. Ohrnberger, a two-time all-Big Ten selection at Penn State, earned first-team honors as a senior in 2008. Schaeffer completed his broadcast journalism degree in 2002.

San Diego State’s first season under new head coach Sean Lewis begins Aug. 31 at Snapdragon Stadium against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Aztecs will play six of their 12 games in 2024 at Snapdragon Stadium.
