I recently attended an Educators Night at the Comic-Con Museum and paid $10 to park for 1.5 hours in Balboa Park. This is the park where I grew up, where I’ve given hundreds of volunteer hours, and where I have provided financial support.
My family’s service to Balboa Park spans generations. My grandfather, Howard L. Weisbrod, was a biologist, founder of the San Diego International Science Fair, director of education at the Natural History Museum, and a volunteer consultant to the San Diego Zoo.
My mother and I collectively served 28 years on the board of trustees of San Diego Junior Theatre, and she served 22 years on the Spreckels Organ Society board. We have served on park committees, built public awareness, raised critical funds, and hosted community events.
It’s been a multigenerational investment of considerable time and treasure. And our family is just one of many.
Charging residents to park in Balboa Park is a slap in the face to generations who have built and sustained it. It’s a rookie, hurtful and unimaginative decision that is unbecoming of our city’s leadership.
Residents have earned free parking in Balboa Park.
