Starving seabirds line San Diego’s coast. Rising ocean temperatures are to blame

As TOSD’s resident Gen-Zer, I spend some time on the internet looking for stories. Yesterday I saw a Reddit post questioning why there seem to be more dead birds than usual on La Jolla’s shoreline. San Diegans had some ideas as to why, so we sent our Thomas Murphy to report it out.

If you’ve heard about this phenom before, it was related to an uptick in toxic algae — right now, it’s because the birds are starving.

Why? It boils down to the same reason we’ll be seeing more Great White sharks near our coasts this year. The water is getting warmer, faster.

When water warms up there’s less oxygen in it and fish can’t survive. So, they swim further down to where they can get the oxygen they need. That’s bad news for the birds. They can’t dive deep enough to grab a meal, and starvation ensures. I’ll leave it to the experts to break it down further for you.
