Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!

Steve Anderson, Community Newsletter Host

Change is always hard. It feels like Ocean Beach has been undergoing some major changes over the past few years.

So when I heard that a developer might put a “Walmart Depot” down the street at the old Rite Aid, I was sort of upset. I wasn’t heartbroken by the loss of the Rite Aid, however I think it’s hard to see some of our other small businesses close while corporations start to invade.

The “Walmart Depot” wouldn’t even be an actual store, but a place for delivery drivers to pick up products and distribute them throughout the community. Sure, maybe this adds some convenience for delivery times, but I think it strips away some of the great qualities of living in a small walkable coastal town.

On top of that, it eliminates a lot of commerce that could be happening at local small businesses, like OB Hardware or The Olive Tree Market. The good news is, this isn’t a done deal. Developers are just considering putting a Walmart Depot in the space, but it could also be used for housing.

In other news, Point Loma Nazarene Men’s basketball won their third PacWest Conference Championship in four years and will play in the NCAA Div. II tournament. I’m always happy to see my alma mater win. Go Sea Lions!
