Good morning, San Diego.
How much progress and change is too much for one community?
That might be a question on everybody’s mind around Ocean Beach fairly soon, as developers are eyeing a former Rite Aid site as a place for a new “Walmart Depot.” It wouldn’t be a traditional store, as its name suggests. Rather, it would be a place that delivery drivers to pick up products to distribute nearby, but where no one could walk in to buy anything.
It’s not set in stone yet, but as our Tessa Balc reports, there are few barriers to the conversion so far.
Speaking of change, our Drew Sitton reports that a 40-year study of our kelp has concluded that climate change is disrupting our beautiful offshore forests. Whether this is the start of a long downward trend or simply a little downtick remains to be seen.
One thing is for sure, though, it’s not getting any cooler any time soon.
If the world is getting to you after those last two stories, there are opportunities to drown your sorrows this week, provided you enjoy either geometry or pie — or, most fortuitously, both. Pi Day is this March 14 (get it? 3/14?), and a bunch of local pie-related businesses are going all in on promotions that day. Check out our roundup of Pi Day promotions, along with some pie places we just happen to like.
I hope to partake on that day myself, provided that I’ve recovered from my Girl Scout cookie binge over the last couple of days. It’s not looking good, though (I have two fresh boxes of Thin Mints staring at me as I write this), so I may have to just stick to the math.
