Today’s newsletter is presented by addressSD.com.
Good morning, San Diego.
We’re leading today with a devastating story that those of you who are sensitive to animal suffering may want to skip, and in fact if you are, just skip to the next paragraph of this newsletter now: A man shown in a video dragging his dog to death has turned himself in to authorities, visibly heartbroken. The man — who is currently experiencing homelessness — told authorities that he had forgotten his dog was tied to his vehicle when he drove off. The Doberman was euthanized due to the extent of its injuries. He is expected to face animal cruelty charges.
The excitement of the July Fourth long weekend — muted as it seems to have been this year — has come and gone, leaving us staring down the barrel at an incoming major heat wave, our first real one of the year. It’s a good reminder to hydrate and not push yourself too far physically when the temperatures are soaring into the triple digits.
We also have some lively sports stories today, if you’re interested in tennis or track (and who isn’t?), Shark Summer has returned to Birch Aquarium, and big changes afoot for San Diego Youth Services.
Stay cool out there, San Diego.
